Recycle Hawai’i collaborates with island communities on education and effective climate action that transforms a culture of waste into one supporting a vibrant planet. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization, helping our Hawaiʻi Island communities REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE since 1992 and our grassroots efforts date back further, to 1989. Recycle Hawaiʻi pioneered Transfer Station Reuse Centers and continues to deliver and advocate innovative waste diversion opportunities for the residents of Hawaiʻi.

About the EPA REO Grant:
The Hawaiʻi Youth Clean Stream Campaign and Waste-to-Wealth Initiative is a three-year grant program that aims to embed environmental justice initiatives in programs designed to significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills on Hawaiʻi Island. A partnership between Recycle Hawaiʻi and the Kaʻū Global Learning Lab fosters the development of youth-led, community-based education campaigns that promote composting, raise awareness about plastic pollution, and inform the public about ongoing recycling opportunities.

Position Overview:
Recycle Hawaiʻi is seeking a knowledgeable and passionate Hawaiian Cultural Coordinator to join our team for the Hawaiʻi Youth Clean Stream Campaign and Waste-to-Wealth Initiative. This part-time, hybrid position involves connecting Hawaiian cultural elements and indigenous wisdom to the program and the grant's Zero Waste Campaigns. The role includes translating content into ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, editing all program content to ensure it is diacritically correct in its usage of the Hawaiian language, and supporting the Lead Student Coordinator & Program Director in classroom instruction and grant behavioral change campaigns. Since this is a three-year grant, we are looking for candidates willing to make a three-year commitment to the program. Preference will be given to candidates living in Ka’ū.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Connect Hawaiian cultural elements and indigenous wisdom to the program and Zero Waste Campaigns

  • Translate content into ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi

  • Edit program content and communications to ensure diacritical correctness in Hawaiian language usage

  • Support the Lead Student Coordinator & Program Director in classroom instruction and grant behavioral change campaigns

  • Chaperone class trips

  • Assist with the promotion of zero waste community awareness and collection events

  • Connect various Hawaiian cultural groups to the grant program and nurture partnerships

Skills and Experience:

  • Must be able to speak and write in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi

  • Deep knowledge of Hawaiian cultural practices and beliefs

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, Google Drive, and Mac IOS

  • Experience with social media and content generation

  • Creativity and flexibility with patience for a developing program

  • Ability to work autonomously after given direction, as well as collaboratively in a team

  • Passion for sustainability and zero waste initiatives

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Background in nonprofit programmatic work is a plus but not mandatory

  • Associate's degree preferred or 3+ years’ experience translating and/or working with students

Salary & Benefits:
This is a part-time, hybrid position. Pay is $35,000 - $42,000 a year, commensurate with experience and hours available to work. Benefits are optional and subject to negotiation.

Travel:
The candidate must be able to travel with the group and attend in-class sessions when needed at Ka’ū High School and assist with student pickups around Kaʻū for special events.
