Recycle Hawaiʻi pioneered Transfer Station Reuse Centers and continues to deliver and advocate innovative waste diversion opportunities for the residents of Hawaiʻi.
About the EPA REO Grant:
The Hawaiʻi Youth Clean Stream Campaign and Waste-to-Wealth Initiative is a three-year grant program that aims to embed environmental justice initiatives in programs designed to significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills on Hawaiʻi Island. A partnership between Recycle Hawaiʻi and the Kaʻū Global Learning Lab fosters the development of youth-led, community-based education campaigns that promote composting, raise awareness about plastic pollution, and inform the public about ongoing recycling opportunities.
Position Overview:
Recycle Hawaiʻi is seeking a dedicated and connected Marshallese Community Coordinator to join our team for the Hawaiʻi Youth Clean Stream Campaign and Waste-to-Wealth Initiative. This part-time, hybrid position involves supporting the Marshallese students involved in the grant program, translating communications into Marshallese for the parents of Marshallese students to keep them informed of important program updates, and being the point of contact between the grant program and the Marshallese community in Ocean View. The role also includes outreach to the Marshallese community to initiate zero waste programs in Ocean View spearheaded by the Marshallese students in the grant program. Since this is a three-year grant, we are looking for candidates willing to make a three-year commitment to the program. Preference will be given to candidates living in Ka’ū and connected to the Marshallese Community living in Ocean View.
Key Responsibilities:
Support Marshallese students involved in the grant program
Translate communications into Marshallese for parents
Act as the point of contact between the grant program and the Marshallese community in Ocean View
Outreach to the Marshallese community to initiate zero waste programs in Ocean View
Support the Lead Student Coordinator & Program Director in classroom instruction and grant behavioral change campaigns
Chaperone class trips
Assist with the promotion of zero waste community awareness and collection events
Skills and Experience:
Must be able to speak and write in Marshallese
Connection to the Marshallese community in Ocean View
Proficient in MS Office Suite, Google Drive, and Mac IOS
Experience with social media and content generation
Creativity and flexibility with patience for a developing program
Ability to work autonomously after given direction, as well as collaboratively in a team
Passion for sustainability and zero waste initiatives
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Background in nonprofit programmatic work is a plus but not mandatory
Associate's degree preferred or 3+ years’ experience translating and/or working with students
Salary & Benefits:
This is a part-time, hybrid position. Pay is $35,000 - $42,000 a year, commensurate with experience and hours available to work. Benefits are optional and subject to negotiation.
Travel:
The candidate must be able to travel with the group and attend in-class sessions when needed at Kaʻu High School and assist with student pickups around Kaʻū for special events.
