About the EPA REO Grant:
The Hawaiʻi Youth Clean Stream Campaign and Waste-to-Wealth Initiative is a three-year grant program that aims to embed environmental justice initiatives in programs designed to significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills on Hawaiʻi Island. A partnership between Recycle Hawaiʻi and the Kaʻū Global Learning Lab fosters the development of youth-led, community-based education campaigns that promote composting, raise awareness about plastic pollution, and inform the public about ongoing recycling opportunities.

Position Overview:
Recycle Hawaiʻi is seeking a dedicated and passionate lead student coordinator to join our team for the Hawaiʻi Youth Clean Stream Campaign and Waste-to-Wealth Initiative. This hybrid, flextime, salaried position involves coordinating group field trips, assisting with classroom instruction, and supporting the program director. The lead student coordinator will also assist students with photography, videography, and documenting the progression of the grant program. This is a three-year grant, and we are seeking a candidate willing to make a three-year commitment to the program - preference given to Ka’ū residents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate group field trips

  • Assist with classroom instruction

  • Keep students' parents updated on program activities

  • Support the program director with lesson planning, grant reporting, data collection, and management

  • Organize community awareness events

  • Assist students with photography, videography, and documenting the progression of the grant program

  • Build and maintain relationships with other zero waste youth groups throughout Hawaiʻi and out of state through outreach and ongoing communications

  • Identify and track funding opportunities that support greater youth involvement in the program

  • Work with students, program director, & KGLL partners to ensure the production of a steady stream of content for our social media & website

  • Ability to step-in and temporarily manage program along with the administrative assistant in the program director’s absence

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working with high school-aged youth

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite and Google Drive

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Passion for sustainability and zero waste initiatives

  • Ability to work autonomously after given direction, as well as collaboratively in a team

  • Creativity and flexibility with patience for a developing program

  • Innovative thinking in supporting student cohorts with zero waste campaigns and marketing

  • Background in nonprofit programmatic work is a plus but not mandatory

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or 5+ years of experience in working with students

Travel:
The candidate must be able to travel with the group and attend in-class sessions three times a week at Ka’u High School and assist with student pickups around Kaʻū for special events.

Salary & Benefits:
Pay is $45,000 - $50,000 a year commensurate with experience and hours available to work. Benefits are optional and subject to negotiation.
