Recycle Hawaiʻi is leading the transition toward a Zero Waste future across the islands. Through policy advocacy, community programs, innovative waste recovery systems, and direct collaboration with government and businesses, we are building the infrastructure and leadership needed to keep resources out of landfills and in our communities.
For more than three decades, Recycle Hawaiʻi has been at the forefront of the movement to reduce waste and recover valuable resources across Hawaiʻi Island. Founded in 1992 as a nonprofit educational organization, Recycle Hawaiʻi has worked with communities, businesses, and policymakers to transform the culture of waste into one that supports a thriving and resilient planet.
Our work bridges policy and practice. We advocate for smarter waste policy while simultaneously implementing real-world solutions that demonstrate how Zero Waste systems can function in island communities.
Recycle Hawaiʻi has helped pioneer many of the resource recovery initiatives that residents rely on today. Our organization helped launch early recycling programs and worked to establish transfer station reuse centers that return usable materials back to the community rather than sending them to the landfill.
Today, we continue to lead the transition toward a circular economy in Hawaiʻi—where materials are reused, repaired, composted, and recycled rather than discarded.
A Zero Waste future requires more than recycling bins—it requires new systems, leadership, and infrastructure.
Recycle Hawaiʻi works directly with legislators, government agencies, and community leaders to design policies and programs that reduce waste at the source while recovering valuable materials that would otherwise be lost.
Our work includes:
Through these efforts, Recycle Hawaiʻi acts as both a policy catalyst and an on-the-ground implementation partner, helping Hawaiʻi move from waste disposal toward resource stewardship.
Island communities require creative solutions.
Recycle Hawaiʻi recently launched one of the first in-vessel composting systems on Hawaiʻi Island, demonstrating how organic waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich soil rather than producing methane in landfills. This system allows food waste from schools and institutions to be processed locally while creating valuable compost that supports agriculture and soil health.
With additional support, we plan to deploy more of these innovative systems across the island—expanding local composting capacity and closing the loop on organic waste.
We also continue to explore new approaches to waste recovery, circular economy strategies, and community-scale solutions that reduce reliance on costly landfill expansion.
Over the past 30+ years, Recycle Hawaiʻi has helped shape the waste reduction movement on Hawaiʻi Island through:
Every initiative builds momentum toward a future where waste is no longer buried or burned—but treated as a resource.
To continue leading this work, Recycle Hawaiʻi is seeking $500,000 in general operating support to expand our programs and maintain the capacity needed to drive systems change across the islands.
Your support will help us:
General operating support allows our team to respond quickly to emerging opportunities, collaborate with policymakers, and implement solutions that create lasting impact.
The transition to a circular economy will not happen overnight—but with the right leadership and community support, it is possible.
By supporting Recycle Hawaiʻi, you are investing in proven solutions that reduce waste, strengthen communities, and protect our island environment for future generations.
Join us in building Hawaiʻi’s Zero Waste future.
