Plastic never truly disappears. Instead, it breaks down into microplastics that infiltrate the ocean, soil, food systems, and even the air we breathe. For island ecosystems like Hawaiʻi, the impacts are amplified:

- Advance policy advocacy at the local, state, and international level—including engagement with the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee working toward a global plastics treaty
- Expand community ocean cleanups, bringing together students, residents, visitors, environmental groups, and community leaders to restore Hawaiʻi’s coastlines
- Grow youth education programs in schools and organizations, teaching plastic lifecycle, waste reduction strategies, ocean stewardship, and community leadership
- Scale community waste reduction programs, including zero-waste events, reusable systems, sustainable packaging awareness, and composting education
Reducing waste upstream prevents pollution downstream—and builds the systems Hawaiʻi needs for a sustainable future.
Through our plastic pollution programs, Recycle Hawaiʻi has:
- Organized and supported coastal cleanup events removing plastic debris from beaches and marine ecosystems across Hawaiʻi Island
- Partnered with organizations such as Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund to address marine debris and plastic pollution
- Engaged youth as hands-on remediators and advocates, connecting ocean stewardship to real-world environmental action
- Participated in legislative and international discussions, including engagement with global plastics treaty negotiations
- Promoted zero-waste and reusable systems in communities and at events to reduce plastic at the source
