Recycle Hawaiʻi has been at the forefront of waste prevention and resource recovery on Hawaiʻi Island for more than three decades. Since becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1992, our roots stretch even further back to the late 1980s when grassroots volunteers began pioneering community recycling efforts in Hilo and beyond.
From those early days of volunteer-led reuse stations at transfer stations, we have grown into a trusted island-wide leader in sustainability—designing programs, advocating for better systems, and educating generations of island residents about the value of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Our work is built on collaboration – with residents, schools, government, businesses, and nonprofits – to keep Hawaiʻi’s landscapes, waters, and cultural values healthy.
We combine education, innovation, and advocacy to transform waste systems into resource recovery networks that reflect local needs and global urgency.
Today, Recycle Hawaiʻi continues to evolve with the times – bringing youth leadership, climate action, and equitable circular economy strategies to the forefront of our mission. While our programs and partners have expanded, our heart remains the same: strengthening island communities through thoughtful stewardship of resources and aloha ʻāina.
