Michael Pierron, the Compost King, has a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from University of Hawai’i Hilo. He has been involved with various community gardening projects in east Hawai’i since 2011 and opened the Hilo UrbFarm in 2016 to bring awareness to compost and its role in maintaining a healthy environment. For his programs, Mr. Pierron collects compost from his community through his compost pickup service. Then, he opens his space to school classrooms, camp programs, and composting workshops. Mr. Pierron recently hosted EPIC’s spring break program and loves to work with schools and camps to connect kids to the food they can grow. At the Hilo UrbFarm, the public may attend monthly compost workshops on the third Saturday and last Sunday of each month to ask compost questions. Michael joined Recycle Hawai’i’s Board March 16, 2019. Pictured with our Compost Queen, Dani Burger.
